Joe Penney was on assignment as a photojournalist for Reuters in Nigeria, covering the 2011 elections this spring. He covered the 2010 presidential election in Guinea for CNN and for Reuters. His photos, which can be viewed at westafrica.tumblr.com, have appeared in Voice of America, Le Monde, The New York Times (foreign news and Lens blog), Reuters, Newsweek (cover, Africa edition) and The Montreal Mirror. His work is currently part of an exhibition at the Musée National du Sport in Paris. He is the photo editor for UNA-USA's "A Global Agenda" book, and he graduated from McGill University in Montreal in 2010.

Nigeria, a Regional Powerhouse, Holds Presidential Elections

LAGOS, Nigeria -- Four years after holding disastrous elections in 2007, Nigeria's recent presidential election showed the winner to be the incumbent, Goodluck Jonathan, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission. Jonathan's election on April 9 marks the first time that a candidate from the southern oil-producing Niger Delta has won the country's top political post.

Thousands Flee Ivory Coast for Safer Regions

Nzérékoré, GUINEA -- Political violence in the Ivory Coast has forced nearly 4,000 Ivorians to flee their homes in the west of the country, according to the UN Office of High Commissioner for Refugees.

About 3,500 Ivorians have sought refuge in neighboring Liberia, and some 200 in Guinea, said Astrid Castelein, the UN’s representative here in southeast Guinea.

Violence Clouds Guinea's Presidential Runoff

CONAKRY – Political and ethnic violence that killed at least two people in Guinea in the last week has cast doubt over the country’s ability to hold a peaceful democratic transition from military rule.

Violence broke out last Monday and Tuesday as well as on Friday and Saturday after the West African country’s presidential runoff election was delayed for a fourth time to Nov. 7.

After Several Delays, Guinea Prepares to Vote for a President

CONAKRY – Said Djinnit, the United Nations’ top official in West Africa, traveled on Oct. 13 to the Guinean capital, Conakry, as a show of support for the nation’s Oct. 24 runoff presidential election. The country has been gripped by authoritarian rule and has never held a credible election since its independence from France 52 years ago.
