The Court Will Investigate Libya as the US Senate Praises the UN Referral

The ICC announced today that the ICC prosecutor, Luis Moreno Ocampo, has opened a formal investigation into the situation in Libya. The UN Security Council adopted Resolution 1970 on Saturday, Feb. 26, which referred the situation to the prosecutor, thereby granting the court jurisdiction over alleged crimes committed in Libya since Feb. 15.

Security Council Resolution on Libya Suggests a New Relationship With the Court

On Saturday, Feb. 26, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 1970 to address the ongoing crisis in Libya and to refer the situation there to the ICC prosecutor. Since Libya is not a state party to the Rome Statute, the referral provides the basis for ICC jurisdiction over alleged crimes committed in Libya since Feb. 15.

Sudan Continues Its Civilian Attacks, Chief Prosecutor Tells the Security Council

A Former Congolese Leader Goes on Trial for Use of Rape in War

A Prosecutor Pays a Visit to Guinea

Days before Guinea’s presidential election on Nov. 7, Fatou Bensouda, deputy prosecutor at the International Criminal Court, visited the West African country to warn against any post-poll abuses by the two candidates’ supporters.

The court is investigating the massacre by government soldiers during a pro-democracy civilian rally in September 2009, killing more than 150 people.
